Introduction to the Consultants' Consultant

Making it up as we go along

I was in Melbourne last week. It's looking so beautiful for the Commonwealth Games, and there's all the new season's fashions in the windows!

I coached a woman while in Melbourne. She said her life at work changed forever after she attended a responsible parenting workshop. The workshop not only changed what she did with her children, it allowed her to see what was her problem, and what was someone else's.

It's the small things which change our lives, isn't it? Take a few seconds to follow few links like the ones here: when you look back a year from now, you'll remember that reading my ezine and following a link gave you the missing idea to make your work life more enjoyable!

And of course, gratitude's also important - I wonder if the person who ran that parenting workshop knows how they changed that woman's life at home AND at work? Who haven't you thanked this week?

This Sunday March 5th, I'm running our second public workshop called Life is not a Rehearsal - start improvising. So far about a dozen highly trained corporate consultants are coming along. Why not make a spontaneous decision, and enrol now?

The workshop draws on exercises from theatrical improvisation to hone your business skills. Lots of games and exercises to keep you present, increase your listening, and give you creative energy. It will be a real hoot. If you'd like to take part, then I'd love to see you there. The dates are Sydney March 5 2006, Canberra May 5, 2006. Get some more information and then enrol!

Here's to making it up as we go along in a very practical way!

What's in this ezine

Here’s a summary of what’s in this ezine:

Need an office in Sydney?

Where we work is as important as how and with whom. Walt Disney was said to have had different spaces for different aspects of his creativity.

If you're in need of a creative space, one of my colleagues and friends works in a beautiful, split level architect design space in Kellett Street, Potts Point. They're looking for someone creative. There's lots of natural light, high ceilings, boardroom, kitchen. For more info, follow this link.

Make pillow fights, not war

I am probably the last person on the planet to hear about it - do you know about the Pillow Fight Club?

Apparently people surreptitiously gather in public places and at a given signal (e.g. the chiming of a clock) they start pillow fighting.

The wikipedia entry explains it. Then you can follow these links to see photos in London, Madrid and San Francisco, and Budapest.

Haven't heard of any Australian ones yet, but is it that I've just not been listening? What are your clients listening for right now? How can you get their attention?

Online tools and business improvement

I love receiving regular ezines from the people at flying solo. Robert Gerrish comes across as a practical and easy-to-understand entrepreneur. His website is filled with useful ideas for solo businesses.

For example, this article about how to use online tools to make your business work better. Or this one on using autoresponders for website tasks (need one of those myself!)

Boost your business with a game

Here's a way to attract attention for your cause.

Try playing the game whales revenge. Dodge the harpoons using the arrow keys. The game's designer has an ambition to get a million people to sign a petition to stop Japanese whaling. Sign up if you feel the urge.

And here's the question to ask yourself - is there something simple like this you can do for your business which will have people emailing links to your website around?

And because sometimes you've just got to have a mindless moment on the PC. Here's a bit of fun for that moment. See how far you can get the sheep to go for, dodging mines and traps. Wonder if you can beat my personal record of 916 metres?

Have fun on a Friday

Finally, you know you sometimes need a laugh on a Friday night.

I'm directing a season of Theatresports(R) at Scared Scriptless from March 17 to April 7th. The show is themed to coincide with a certain Hollywood awards night. There'll be starlets and tuxedos and red carpets and envelopes with winners.

All fun, all made up on the spot. Mention the secret word "Hollywood" at the door, and get in 2 for the price of 1 (2 for $5) during March and April!

And if you'd like to pick up some of the skills of improvising to apply in your work, then consider this Sunday's Ludic Creative workshop Life is not a rehearsal - start improvising! is fun, practical and an opportunity to learn something a little different.

Love to hear from you if any of these ideas spark something good for you and yours!

Please do come along and play!
